IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Harry Riley
Merrill
August 21, 1950 – June 2, 2023
Harry Riley Merrill, 72, of Houston, TX, passed from this life on Friday, June 2, 2023, at his home following a lengthy illness. Harry was born on August 21, 1950, at St. Joseph's Maternity, Houston, Texas. He was born and raised in Houston attending elementary and secondary schools there. He graduated in 1969 from Lamar High School, Houston. He also graduated from the University of Houston with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English.
Harry continued living in Houston until he moved to South Austin in the early nineties to be a caregiver for his mother. He took care of her in her home until she passed away. He then returned to Houston and stayed there until his passing in his own home.
Harry was kind, fun-loving, and had a heart of gold. He loved to laugh and had an ornery, mischievous smile to match his personality. He lived life to the fullest and exactly the way he wanted. Harry was unique. There was only one Harry!
Harry enjoyed motorcycle riding, gardening, fishing, and dove hunting. He also enjoyed playing guitar. He was a writer, a paralegal, and an excellent mechanic. He was an expert in the water well industry as well.
Harry loved traveling to Kansas with his brother, Mark, to spend time with family and friends. They enjoyed their time spent there revisiting and reminiscing about fond childhood memories and reconnecting with loved ones.
Harry was a great teacher and mentor to his ten-year younger brother, Mark. They shared a
very special bond. He taught Mark many things about cars—how to work on them, drive them, and instilled in him a love for automobiles in general. He taught Mark many other practical things that he uses in everyday life. He taught him how to navigate life in general.
Harry loved nature. He loved doing things outdoors and tending to his garden and plants. His cat, Lady LaVea, gave him much enjoyment and companionship.
Harry was preceded in death by his parents, Bruce and LaVeada Merrill, two brothers, Bruce Merrill, Jr. and Homer Merrill, and sister-in-law, Pat. Left to cherish his memory are his brother, Mark Merrill, Sr. and wife Sue, sister-in-law Terri Merrill, one son, Matthew Riley Merrill, a granddaughter, Amelie Merrill, many nieces and nephews, and a host of dear family and friends in Kansas and Texas.
Harry was full of life. He will be greatly missed.
