Edward James
Mikes Sr.
July 11, 1938 – January 6, 2025
Edward James Mikes, Sr., 86, a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away peacefully on Monday, January 6, 2025, surrounded by his family. He was born in Shiner, TX and grew up on a farm. Edward graduated from Shiner High School and later attended Baldwin Business College.
Edward was preceded in death by his parents, Annie (Janik) and Ladik Mikes Sr.; his grandson, Jeremy Mikes; his brothers, Robert Mikes, Ladik Mikes Jr., and Bennie Mikes; his sister, Dorothy Rainosek.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 65 years, Dorothy (Velek); his sister, Adella Patek; his daughters, Karen Carnish (Craig) and Linda Trahan (Jim); his sons, Eddie Mikes (Debbie) and Alan Mikes (Tina). Edward is also survived by seven grandchildren: Anthony Mikes (Hollie), Travis Mikes, Shelby Catney (Cody), Matthew Mikes, Kevin Carnish, Zachary Trahan (Kaylee), and Katie Carnish (Travis); along with eight great-grandchildren: Jake and Allie Mikes, Luke, Layton and Lynnex Catney, Miller and Parker Mikes, and Tanner Foulkrod.
In his younger years, Edward enjoyed playing the drums and excelled as a first baseman for the Shiner Clippers, earning the nickname "Shovel." Edward proudly served his country in the U.S. Army for two years, during which he was stationed in Germany. He cherished fishing trips with his sons and grandsons, always sharing memorable tales of his catches. Weekends were filled with watching the Astros and Texans (Oilers) and listening to Molly B's polka music. Edward and Dorothy enjoyed many laughter-filled vacations with Della and Jimmy Patek and Geraldine and Louis Patek. He was an active member of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church for many years and enjoyed being a part of the New Generation Seniors Club. Above all, Edward treasured time spent with his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who brought him immense joy.
Edward will be lovingly remembered for his incredible sense of humor, gentle nature, and the deep love he shared with his family and friends.
Visitation will be held on Friday, January 10, 2025 from 6p.m. - 8p.m. at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church, 6723 Reed Rd. Houston, Texas 77087
Funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, January 11, 2025 at 10 a.m. Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church, 6723 Reed Rd. Houston, Texas 77087.
Interment to Follow at Shiner Catholic Cemetery, 153 CR 348 Shiner, Texas 77984
